Nineteenth-century Italian painters were nationalistic in two ways. First, and most obviously, they depicted people, places and events from Italy's heroic past. The painter Francesco Hayez (1791-1882), well read in the contemporary historical novel, drew on Italy's medieval past and incorporated Italian landmarks in his paintings to incite his fellow Italians to forge a new nation and to reclaim their cultural patrimony1.
