As you ascend the windy road to reach the medieval town of Siena, you are greeted with her quiet charm that has transcended centuries. Siena has always been considered a medieval jewel nestled in the Tuscan hills, waiting to be discovered. Her medieval flavour has been indisputable. In fact, few have ever questioned this distinct characteristic of Siena. When one compares her to Florence, for example, one sees Florence as "Renaissance" and Siena as "Medieval." This simplified description of Siena is, of course, not entirely accurate. Siena is both medieval and renaissance. The description may raise an eyebrow, however, this paper will attempt to illustrate how the Renaissance emerged in Siena through the direct patronage of Pope Pius II (1458-1464) and his chief architect in Siena, Antonio Federighi (1420-1483?).
