GIOSE RIMANELLI'S IL MESTIERE DEL FURBO: A LITERARY TREK (TRICK) THROUGH THE STARS |

The weekly Roman newspaper Lo Specchio published a series of literary commentaries, between 1958 and 1959, penned by the unknown, enigmatic author A. G. Solari. Every week the newspaper was apprehensively awaited throughout Italy by an audience eager to read Solari's column on literary affairs. The world of letters became overtly distressed about learning the identity of this new Procrustes1 who was so informed about literature and the literary circles that he was placing them all on his bed. This unknown writer dared to do the unthinkable: openly and frankly discuss and criticize the mafia-like2 tendencies of the Italian literary world. In his review of the book Leonard Sciascia describes how the Italian letterati were consumed with knowing the identity of this writer: "Nessuno conosceva uno scrittore di nome Solari [...]. Si cominciò ad indagare: e nei salotti dove di solito si facevano "le rose" dei candidati ai premi, si cominciarono a fare "le rose" degli indiziati. Nel '58, incontrando a Roma una delle prime vittime di A. G. Solari, mi fu comunicato una "rosa" di nomi piuttosto larga: [...]3
