The term mannerism has been at the centre of a spirited dialogue among scholars for the last three or four decades. It is a term which has managed to gain a certain degree of emancipation in the face of opposition, largely because of a general recognition, by whatever name, of the phemomena it purports to describe, namely an increased dimension of stylization, a more conscious manipulation of forms and materials to gain unusual effects, that appeared in various degrees throughout the arts practiced in Italy in the late sixteenth century.
