AFTERWORD: BENEDETTO CROCE'S LEGACY FIFTY YEARS LATER

Year 2002. One hundred years later, last Spring, from the publication of Croce's Aesthetics in 1902 and fifty years later, on November 20, from Croce s death. Such events prevails on us that we take stock of these fifty or hundred years and look to the future of Croce Studies. Looking back, the past is not very flattering. Croce's influence is all but waned. Very few of his works are read outside a small circle of disciples and even fewer can be said to be in any way roductive of new work. There are assessments, comparative studies, reviews, and new editions with newer and better commentaries, but Croce's works, from his aesthetics to his literary criticism, have ceased to produce knowledge. Why is that? Some will say that Croce's importance stemmed solely from a position of intellectual and political authority, and perhaps, from the success of some of his historical works. [...]
