In Dante Studies II: Journey to Beatrice, Charles S. Singleton claimed that the thematics of sanctifying grace - gratia gratum faciens - dictated the form of the Divine Comedy. We may remark in passing that, in the matter of the shape which Dante's Comedy was to take, it was indeed of some account "whether anyone arrive at perfect preparation instantaneously, or step by step". Take away the preparation which is step by step, and all of Inferno and almost all of Purgatorio, in so far as they are conceived as a journey, must vanish. And Virgil would have no function whatsoever in the poem1. I would like to broaden Singleton's understanding of grace because I believe that although sanctifying grace helps us understand the experience of the Pilgrim, it slights the experience of the Poet in his struggle both to express himself and present the divine sanction for his mission to his reader.
